THE LONGEST WAIT FOR A MEDAL

Anders Haugen's Olympic bronze medal is surely the most unexpected in Olympic history, coming as it did 50 years after he competed at the 1924 Games in Chamonix. The Norwegian-born American ski-jumper was denied third place by a scoring error which was only noticed in 1974. Norway's Thorlief Haug went to his grave as a Games bronze medallist, but in a touching gesture soon after the mistake was uncovered, Haug's daughter handed over the medal to Haugen in Oslo.
